Step 2 : Answer to the question "What reason did Herod give the wise men for wanting to find the Messiah?"
To worship him - The wise men had been studying the night sky and noticed a new star, which they interpreted as an announcement of a new king’s birth. They headed to Jerusalem to try to find him. When they dropped by King Herod’s palace to ask him what he knew, Herod’s interest was piqued. He was extremely disturbed by the news, and wanted to know everything the wise men knew about this king and where he might be located. The wise men questioned his borderline obsession, so Herod said that he just wanted to worship the new king. But secretly, Herod was terrified of a new ruler usurping his power. He wanted to find the child king first, so that he could remove his competition. Herod told the wise men to keep looking for the newborn king. As soon as they found him, they were to come back and report on his whereabouts. But, being warned in a dream, the wise men left baby Jesus and returned to their own country by a different route.:
