The boardwalk's slatted-board design was made to keep railroad cars and hotels sand-free. Rather than the permanent structure seen today, this boardwalk was disassembled during the winter months. Spanning more than five miles, the Atlantic City boardwalk is the longest in the world and helped to establish the Jersey Shore as a must-visit vacation getaway for city slickers in nearby Philadelphia and New York City. By giving vacationers a seaside walk with shops, hotels, and restaurants, the boardwalk transformed Atlantic City into a summer resort and winter health spa. A railroad was built to connect it to Camden, New Jersey, drawing international visitors as well. :
