It was built by Colonel John Overton Jr. and named for his wife, Harriet Maxwell Overton. Colonel Overton poured so much money into the five-story, 240-room establishment that it was nicknamed “Overton’s Folly.” The coffee brand we know today entered the picture after Joel Cheek, a traveling grocery salesman, created his own coffee blend with beans from three countries.
