  1. With roughly 8.3 million people within city limits, the Big Apple lives up to its name. Not only is it the most populous city in the United States, but no other American city even comes close. New York City is more than twice as populous than the next largest city, Los Angeles. The city itself is also more populous than 38 out of the 50 states. The states that have larger populations than New York City are: California (39.9 million people), Texas (29.5 million), Florida (22 million), Pennsylvania (12.8 million), Illinois (12.7 million), Ohio (11.7 million), Georgia (10.7 million), North Carolina (10.6 million), Michigan (10 million), New Jersey (9 million), and Virginia (8.6 million). Oh, and New York State itself, of course — there are 19.4 million in the Empire State, more than half of whom live somewhere other than in New York City.
