Step 1 : Introduction to the question "Which writer claims authorship of the first modern detective story?"
...When Edgar Allan Poe's short story "The Murders in the Rue Morgue" appeared in print in 1841, a new literary genre began. Mysteries were not a new genre, but with Poe's publication the focus on a character who solved a mystery through analyzing facts of the case introduced a new twist on the classic mystery. Poe saw the popularity of what he called his 'tales of ratiocination' as something intriguing. In "Murders in the Rue Morgue," Poe introduced his fictional detective C. Auguste Dupin, a recluse who the police turned to when they faced a crime they couldn't solve. Dupin would appear in three of Poe's writings, thus introducing another staple of the detective genre - the recurring character. Source: NPS.gov
