Step 2 : Answer to the question "What organism can help clean up oil spills and radioactive sites?"

Mushrooms - Fungi are one of the most commonly found organisms on the planet, yet scientists admit there’s still so much to learn about them. That’s because mushrooms, mold, and other fungi were once considered plants, when in reality their cell structure is more similar to that of animals. (Fungi weren’t given their own scientific kingdom classification until 1969, more than two centuries after the kingdom system was introduced.) While an estimated 3.8 million species of fungi call Earth home, researchers are only familiar with around 10% of them, and emerging discoveries suggest mushrooms may be hiding unknown traits that can solve global problems. Fungi experts have found that mushrooms at disaster sites such as Chernobyl are able to break down radioactive material through a process called radiosynthesis, while toadstools at an oil spill site in Ecuador can remove toxins from petroleum-soaked soil. One fungus found at a Pakistan landfill appears to break down polyurethane plastics in weeks compared to the years it takes the plastic to degrade naturally. While it may be years before mushrooms can tackle these problems on a large-scale basis, fungi of all types already impact our daily lives. Antibiotics such as penicillin, vaccines, heart medications, and even laundry detergent all contain enzymes, proteins, and other components harvested from the fungi family.:
