Colorado - The spectacular-looking Wheeler Geologic Area near Creede, Colorado, is the result of millions of years of volcanic activity. About 25 million years ago, one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in Earth’s history occurred in the Colorado Rockies, covering most of what is now the Centennial State with ash and volcanic material. Further eruptions followed for many more years, creating these spiky peaks and layered formations as the material was deposited and then eroded. The area was eventually named for George M. Wheeler of the United States Army Corp of Topographical Engineers, who studied the area in the late 19th century. The site was established as a National Monument in 1908 by Theodore Roosevelt, although later lost its status — the area’s relative inaccessibility by automobile caused its popularity to wane. Today, it remains a hidden gem for those willing to make the trek. :
