Mumbai, India - This colossal arch at the edge of Mumbai Harbour has welcomed visitors to India since 1924. Designed by architect George Wittet, the monument was originally planned in honor of King George V and Queen Mary’s 1911 visit to the city. Unfortunately, by the time they arrived, the Gateway of India was still 13 years away from being completed. Stretching 83 feet high, the yellow basalt arch features four turrets and a mix of Hindu and Muslim architectural styles. When India gained its independence from Britain in 1948, the last British troops, the First Battalion of the Somerset Light Infantry, marched through the arch. It remains an iconic fixture of Mumbai and a major tourist attraction.:
