It sits 11,000 feet above sea level in the Bernese Alps of western Switzerland, named after the rocky summit on which it’s perched. In addition to the observatory, the site includes weather stations, laboratories, workshops, a library, and living quarters for researchers. While the Sphinx Observatory may look like it’s at the end of the Earth, it is surprisingly easy to access. From the city of Interlaken, a train takes you to Jungfraujoch Railway Station. Completed in 1912, it is the highest altitude train station in Europe, and from here, an elevator takes you right to the Sphinx’s observation deck.:
