Portsmouth, England - The 550-foot-tall Spinnaker Tower looms over the harbor of Portsmouth, England, offering incredibles views of the city, the waterfront, and the Isle of Wight. The tower was planned to celebrate the new millennium, and Portsmouth residents voted for the spinnaker design from among three competing versions. (A spinnaker is a large, triangular sail used in sailing off the wind.) The shape was chosen to reflect Portsmouth’s maritime history. As with many large-scale construction projects, Spinnaker Tower ran into political, financial, and other issues getting off the ground, and construction didn’t actually begin until late 2001. The tower finally opened in October 2005, and now boasts three viewing decks, a glass “Sky Walk,” a cafe, a restaurant, and a garden.:
