Joan Crawford - While the Academy might have awarded Joan Crawford with an Oscar for “Mildred Pierce” (1945), the Hollywood actress wasn’t so “dear” in the eyes of her adoptive daughter Christina, who wrote a memoir cataloging her horrific upbringing in 1978 — just a year after Crawford died. The book, “Mommie Dearest,” was later adapted into a film starring Faye Dunaway as Crawford and relayed a life of alcoholism and abuse entailing slapping, punching, strangling, and kicking as a form of discipline. One of the film’s most famous scenes sees Crawford furious that her daughter has used a wire hanger to hang up her clothes. After tossing nearly all of Christina’s dresses on the floor, Crawford beats her with a hanger, livid that “You live in the most beautiful house in Brentwood, and you don’t care if your clothes look hunchbacked from wire hangers.”:
