Step 1 : Introduction to the question "Why did David refuse Saul's armor?"
...King Saul doubted David's ability to fight the Philistine giant Goliath. But despite being young and much smaller than Goliath, David knew his unique relationship with God would grant him victory. David confidently explained that his job as a shepherd to his father's sheep had prepared him to fight back beasts. The God who gave him victory over threats to his flock was the same God who would provide him with victory over this Philistine. Still doubtful, Saul gave David his sword and armor to wear into the fight. Respectfully, David put it on, but after walking around, he realized it was not what he was used to wearing. David shed the armor and replaced it with the tools God had given him in the past: his staff, five rocks from the brook, his shepherd's pouch, and a slingshot. Though this replacement may have seemed foolish, David successfully defeated and killed Goliath that day.
