Step 2 : Answer to the question "Where did California get its name?"

A romance novel - While many states get their names from British royals (like Virginia, Georgia, and the Carolinas) or are derived from Native American words (like Iowa, which means “beautiful land”), California’s name came from a 16th-century romance novel of all places. Written by Garcia Ordonez de Montalvo, the novel was titled, "Las Sergas del muy esforzado caballero Esplandian, hijo del excelente rey Amadis de Gaula," which translates to "The exploits of the very powerful cavalier Esplandian, son of the excellent king Amadis of Gaul." In it, Montalvo describes a fabled island utopia called California. When Spanish conquistadors, who were familiar with the novel, arrived in present-day Baja California, they thought they’d arrived at an island, so they bestowed the name California upon it. After further exploration, the present-day state of California became known as “Alta California" and simply "California" when it became part of the United States.:
