Step 1 : Introduction to the question "What disco hit was co-written by David Letterman's former bandleader?"
..."It's Raining Men" was a number-one dance hit in the United States, and reached the top ten in various other countries. The song was written by Paul Shaffer and Paul Jabara in 1979. Paul Shaffer would go on to serve as David Letterman's musical director, band leader, and sidekick three years later. After the song was written, it was offered to Donna Summer, but she hated it. Deeply religious, she was turned off by the line, "It's raining men, hallelujah". The song was also rejected by Diana Ross, Cher, and Barbra Streisand before being accepted by Martha Wash and Izora Armstead of The Weather Girls.

I have never heard of IT'S RAINING MEN, only RAIN MAN, with AL PACINO. But, if the WEATHER GIRLS accepted it when ROSS, STRISAND, CHER AND SOMMER would not, then I suppose it was a hit.
