Named after the nearby Spanish embassy, the 135 irregularly placed steps were constructed in the 18th century to connect the embassy and the Trinita dei Monti church with the Holy See below. (In Italian, the steps are called the Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti — or steps of the Trinita dei Monti.)
