United Kingdom - Known officially as St. Catherine’s Oratory, the “Pepperpot” is located on the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England. The Pepperpot is both a lighthouse and an oratory (a type of chapel) and was built in 1314 as an act of penance by Walter de Godeton for stealing communion wine from a shipwreck originally bound for a local monastery. The church ordered him to construct a lighthouse and oratory where a priest could tend to the light and pray for sailors at sea. Today, the Pepperpot is the only surviving medieval lighthouse in Great Britain.:
