When working on his 1973 film “American Graffiti,” one of the sound editor’s shorthand notes referred to “Reel Two, Dialogue Two” as “R2-D2.” Lucas latched onto the acronym and introduced the world’s favorite droid in “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope” (1977). Chewbacca’s name was also inspired by the director’s enormous malamute, while Han Solo is a play on the character acting as a sole gunman.:
