King George II - The thirteenth of the original British colonies, Georgia was the brainchild of philanthropist James Oglethorpe. After losing a friend in a debtors’ prison, he envisioned a U.S. colony dedicated to British debtors, a place where they could get back on their feet and take ownership over their lives. The new colony was named after King George II, who granted the charter that led to the establishment of the colony in Savannah in 1733. Unfortunately, Georgia didn’t quite live up to the social-reform ideals Oglethorpe had hoped for, and he ended up leaving the colony just 10 years later. :
