Chinese - The first known monolingual dictionary was the Chinese work Erya, created in the third century BCE. (Some linguists, however, argue that the first dictionary was actually the Shizhoupian, a Chinese calligraphic compendium dating back to the eighth century BCE.) Since then, humans have created monolingual dictionaries in just about every widely used language in the world. However, this work was hardly the first dictionary. Different forms of dictionaries have existed since at least 2300 BCE, when the Akkadian Empire created cuneiform tablets listing words in both Sumerian and Akkadian. :
