Oregon - In September 1906, a four-masted vessel named the Peter Iredale left Santa Cruz, Mexico, on its way to Portland, Oregon, where it was supposed to pick up a shipment of wheat. The ship got most of the way to its destination, but poor conditions sent it aground on Clatsop Beach in Oregon. The crew were unharmed and planned to return the ship to sea after repairs and the weather improved, but the vessel embedded deeper and deeper into the sand. Eventually it was sold for scrap, and the remains became one of most picturesque wrecks on the Pacific Coast at Fort Stevens State Park.:
