Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas - The namesake thermal waters of Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas were long used by Indigenous peoples for their healing benefits. In 1541, Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto discovered the area and proclaimed it “a fountain of youth,” further establishing its reputation for wellness. President Andrew Jackson, also noting the value of the thermal springs, declared the region a preservation and recreation area in 1832 — one of the first of its kind in the U.S. and a full 40 years before Yellowstone National Park became the country’s first national park. In the mid-1800s, the area became known as “the American Spa,” and numerous bathhouses opened, attracting people from all over with the supposed medicinal powers of the thermal waters. Most of the bathhouses have since shut down, and only one is still operating in its original form: the Buckstaff Bathhouse. The area officially became a national park in 1921.:
