Garfield’s farm was located near railroad tracks, which provided easy access for his supporters. Garfield’s low-key approach to campaigning may have reflected the fact that he wasn’t actively seeking the presidency. He attended the Republican National Convention, where former President Ulysses S. Grant was facing off against moderate James G. Blaine. The convention was in a long stalemate, but Garfield suddenly became the nominee on the 36th ballot as a compromise candidate. :
