The initial ports at Hastings, Sandwich, Hythe, Dover, and New Romney were later joined by ports at Rye and Winchelsea, along with over 30 other ports along the coast. The original Cinque Ports were the centers of the royal fleet during medieval times, which were likely installed during Edward the Confessor’s reign during the mid-11th century in order to defend the channel passage. The ports’ defense became increasingly important during the Norman Conquest but fell out of favor in the 14th century. Of the original Cinque Ports, only Dover remains a port of importance.:
