Oklahoma - Back in the early 20th century, blackberries were a major cash crop in the small town of McLoud, located 30 miles outside of Oklahoma City. Proud of their local delights, the Blackberry Growers Association and McLoud Chamber of Commerce sent a crate of berries to President Harry Truman in 1949. He declared them the best he’d ever tasted, and proclaimed McLoud the "Blackberry Capital of the World.” Blackberries still grow wild all over town, although they’re no longer a top crop. However, McLoud still holds an annual Blackberry Festival to celebrate their history of producing the tart, juicy berries. The fest features a parade, a pageant, carnival rides, a car show, and a “cobbler gobbler” eating contest that leaves plenty of blackberry-smeared faces.:
