Explorers Louis Joliet and Jacques Marquette used the name to describe the river on a map drawn in 1674. When French explorer Rene Robert Cavelier used their map, he misread their cursive letter “M” as the letters “Ou” and printed “Ouisconsin” onto his maps. Although he later tried to fix his mistake, the French-inspired spelling stuck. But by the 1820s, large numbers of new settlers were flocking to the region, and the U.S. government began to use the “W” spelling instead. When the area became a territory in 1836, it was officially named Wisconsin.:
