However, the micronation of Liechtenstein (sandwiched between Switzerland and Austria) has never participated in the contest. Why? Joining Eurovision first requires membership of the European Broadcasting Union, which is expensive, especially for smaller countries like Liechtenstein. Being located in Europe is not a prerequisite, however, and Australia has competed in the contest since 2016. Originally started as a way for the countries of postwar Western Europe to unite over song, Eurovision has since grown to be a mega annual competition. Forty-one countries currently take part, but only 26 make it through to the Grand Final, held on a Saturday in May. The 2021 contest will be held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.:
