Czech Republic and Slovakia - When World War I ended in 1918, the Austro-Hungarian Empire collapsed, and the country of Czechoslovakia was formed in Central Europe from Slovakia, a former region of Hungary, and the historic Czech Lands of Bohemia and Moravia. The new republic adopted a blended national anthem. The Czech opera “Fidlovačka,” served as one half of the anthem, while the Slovak folk song “Kopala Studienku,” served as the other half. For 75 years, the anthem rang over the combined state, until the pair again split in 1993, forming the separate countries of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Naturally, the two split their anthem down the middle, with the first verse going back to the Czech Republic and the second verse to Slovakia. :
