Step 2 : Answer to the question "What U.S. state was once a kingdom?"
Hawaii - In 1778, James Cook became the first confirmed western explorer to reach the Hawaiian Islands. Though he called them the Sandwich Islands, the name didn’t stick, and in 1826 the United States signed a formal treaty recognizing the independence of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Of course, people had been living on this chain of islands long before Cook’s arrival. It’s believed that the first-ever settlers of Hawaii arrived from Polynesia around 300 CE, followed roughly 700 years later by groups from Bora Bora and Raiatea. In 1889, Queen LiliÊ»uokalani was overthrown in a coup sponsored by U.S. business interests, marking the end of Hawaiian monarchic rule. Hawaii was officially annexed as a territory by the U.S. in 1898 — despite much protest by the local population — and in 1959 Hawaii became the 50th state of the Union. In 1993, the U.S. government officially apologized for the coup that took place 100 years earlier.:
