India - From the air, Loktak Lake — one of India’s largest freshwater lakes — looks like it has hundreds of flat islands on its surface. However, they're not islands at all; they are floating masses of vegetation known locally as “phumdis” — formed from grass, reeds, and soil joining together on the lake’s surface. The phumdis have roots that reach down onto the lake bed, anchoring them in place and allowing them to support weight. A special kind of deer has made these islands its habitat, but humans have made their mark, too. Fishermen's huts, a school, and other buildings have sprung up on the “islands,” the largest of which is just over 15 square miles. The unique ecosystem at Loktak was recognized by India's government in 1977 as a national park, so it is officially the world's only floating national park.:
