Vienna - Blending ancient Greek and Roman architecture with various other architectural styles, including Baroque, Byzantine, and Renaissance elements, the Karlskirche cathedral in Vienna, Austria, was commissioned as a thank you to God. The last surge of the Black Plague broke out in central Europe in the early 18th century, prompting Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI to promise a church should the city of Vienna be saved. When it was, the church was built by the Habsburg Imperial Court and dedicated to St. Carlo Borromeo, the emperor’s namesake and a saint who once attended to 16th-century plague victims. Designed by architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, the dome is similar to that of St. Peter’s Basilica in Rome with a design featuring angels and sun rays above the main altar. St. Borromeo’s ascension is also depicted.:
