Maryland - While much of the country adopted and abided by the 18th amendment, Maryland gave Prohibition a hard pass. Each state was required to create laws enforcing prohibition within their borders, but Maryland, nicknamed “the Free State,” simply didn’t. The state’s many immigrants cherished drinking as a part of culture — and their legislators agreed. Federal law eventually won, and Prohibition was instated from 1920 to 1933. But that doesn’t mean Maryland’s drinkers, or the rest of the country, diligently followed suit. In 1933, the 21st amendment was passed and ratified, ultimately ending Prohibition. :
