[Answer] Which Jane Austen novel was the inspiration for “Bridget Jones’ Diary”?

Step 1 : Introduction to the question "Which Jane Austen novel was the inspiration for “Bridget Jones’ Diary”?"

...Helen Fielding, the author of “Bridget Jones Diary,” was trying to piece together a plot from her popular newspaper columns featuring the character. At the same time, the 1995 adaptation of “Pride & Prejudice” was airing, and Fielding was “infatuated” with it. As Fielding put it in a later interview, “And so I just stole the plot ... I thought Jane Austen wouldn't mind." Some of the allusions to “Pride” include Bridget working for Pemberley Press (the home of Mr. Darcy) and her love interest, of course, being a stoic man named Mark Darcy. For the 2001 film adaptation, the producers didn’t look too far when casting Mark — they cast the most well-known Mr. Darcy, Colin Firth.
