Step 1 : Introduction to the question "8. When CO2 is sprayed over a fire, it is extinguished. What is the primary role of CO2 in this?"
...1. The reason has not yet been found 2. It reduces the temperature of the burning substance to a temperature below its ignition temperature 3. It cuts off the oxygen supply 4. CO2 dissolves the burning substance and hence the fire stops There are three conditions necessary for combustion. 1)Presence of a combustible substance(like paper, wood, etc.) 2)Presence of a supporter of combustion(like oxygen) 3)Attainment of ignition temperature. CO2 is heavier than oxygen. It settles on the top of the burning substance and cuts off the O2supply to the fuel. So the second condition is not satisfied and the fire is put-out. Water extinguishes the fire by lowering its temperature. So the third condition is not satisfied and the fire is extinguished. Liked my quiz? Do check out my other science quizzes.
