...
The Taj Mahal is a building and tomb built in the 17th century by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It is located in the city of Agra on the south bank of the Yamuna River. The building is one of India's biggest tourist attractions and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 2007, it was listed as one of the 7 Wonders of the World.
The Taj Mahal is an example of Muslim Architecture. It takes styles from a mixture of building designs, including ancient Indian, Persian, and Mughal arts. It was constructed with materials from all over the world and involved a workforce of over 20,000 people. Shah Jahan insisted on the use of white marble inlaid with semi-precious stones, instead of the typical red sandstone of the era. Unfortunately, due to high levels of pollution, the Taj Mahal is turning yellow.
Shah Jahan (1592-1666) was the fifth Mughal emperor, reigning from 1628 to 1658. During his reign, the Mughal Empire reached the peak of its glory. Mumtaz Mahal (1593-1631) was his favourite wife and the only one of the five wives to become consort. She died in 1631 during the birth of their fourteenth child, a daughter named Gauhar Ara Begum (1631-1706).
