It passed both legislative houses in 1972, but the governor refused to sign it into law. In May 2021, Maryland became the second state without an official state song — perhaps temporarily — when it removed “Maryland, My Maryland” from its roster without yet having a replacement. It was removed due to its use in the Confederacy during the Civil War and its reference to Abraham Lincoln as a tyrant.:
