At 11,158 feet above sea level, the Eisenhower Tunnel became the world’s highest tunnel upon its completion in 1979 and remains the highest in the country today. Tunneling into the Rocky Mountain Continental Divide, Eisenhower Tunnel takes Interstate 70 on a 1.7-mile path around Loveland Pass. The tunnel is named for President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who commissioned its construction in 1956. However, technically only one half of the tunnel, the westbound bore, is named for President Eisenhower. The other half is named for former Colorado senator Edwin C. Johnson, who lobbied to have the tunnel built.:
