The area was patented by a land baron in 1725 as “Cheivy Chace,” a name which is believed be a play on the Scottish etymology. As for the slightly more famous Chevy Chase? His birth name is Cornelius Crane Chase and he just happened to shine a little light on this sleepy Maryland hamlet when he adopted his stage name.:
