The magnolia was named the state’s official flower in 1900, and the legislature went all-in on the beautiful white blossom by also naming it the official state tree in 1952. No specific species of magnolia was designated as the state tree of Mississippi, but the Southern Magnolia (Magnolia grandiflora) — which grow in abundance throughout the state — probably best represents it. The magnolia is also featured on the state’s bicentennial commemorative quarter, and, in early 2021, the state adopted a new state flag which features a white magnolia blossom in the center encircled by 20 white stars, one gold star, and the words “In God We Trust.” :
