The innkeeper was trying to make chocolate cookies and dropped semisweet chocolate bits into her dough, believing they would melt. The bits never did melt (they merely softened), but Ruth decided to serve them to her patrons anyway. What resulted was the “Toll House Crunch Cookie,” the first recorded chocolate chip cookie recipe. It was published in a Boston newspaper, and later, after Ruth sold the recipe to Nestle, chocolate chip cookies were made en masse across the country.
