Weddell Sea - One of Antarctica’s most famous early explorers, Sir Ernest Shackleton set out to make the first full land crossing of Antarctica in 1914. His ship, the Endurance, ran into ice and became immobilized, forcing Shackleton and his men to escape on foot and in small boats. While he and his crew miraculously survived, the ship sank to the bottom of the Weddell Sea in early 1915. More than a century later, scientists were finally able to locate the shipwreck and discovered it in remarkable condition. Although it had been resting 10,000 feet underwater for 107 years, the ship’s timbers were intact and the ship’s full name was even visible on the stern.:
