Boston, Massachusetts - Boston is a city of many American firsts, including the very first lighthouse in the country. Located on Little Brewster Island, the lighthouse was built in 1716. Its first keeper, as well as his wife and daughter, all sadly drowned two years after its construction upon returning to the island. The British destroyed the original lighthouse, which was rebuilt in 1784. As for America’s oldest existing lighthouse still in operation (never destroyed and rebuilt), it was constructed in 1764 in Sandy Hook, New Jersey. Clearly, New England has the lock on lighthouses.:
