Lake Huron and Lake Michigan are connected by the five-mile-wide Straits of Mackinac, which maintains both lakes’ water at the same level, allowing them to be considered one continuous lake. The combined Lake Michigan-Huron then exceeds Lake Superior in size, at 45,300 square miles compared to Superior’s 31,700 square miles. Lake Michigan’s name actually comes from the Ojibwa Indian word, “mishigami,” meaning large lake. :
