Steve Allen - For many born within the last 70 years, the debate over the best “The Tonight Show” host is limited to Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, and Jimmy Fallon. It may even be forgotten that Johnny Carson wasn't the first host when he permanently took over the show on October 1, 1962. In actuality, that honor goes to Steve Allen. Called simply "Tonight" when it premiered on September 27, 1954, his show has served as an archetype for much of late-night entertainment in the decades that followed. One of his most famous bits, "The Question Man" served as the inspiration for Carson's "Carnac the Magnificent" and he was never afraid to abuse his body for comedy. One time he climbed into a massive bowl of salad with a female wrestler; another he drank six double vodkas on the show to allow his audience to watch his transformation into a giggling mess. His tenure was brief, ending on January 25, 1957, but his legacy as the father of late-night continues to this day.:
