Rio de Janeiro - Brasilia is a relatively recent world capital. Planned and built from scratch in the Brazilian highlands, the city replaced the former capital of Rio de Janeiro upon its inauguration in 1960. The iconic city — with its Christ the Redeemer statue, world-famous beaches like Copacabana, and, of course, Carnival — served as Brazil’s capital for around 200 years. It became the capital of the Portuguese Empires in 1763, replacing Salvador, and even became the seat of Portuguese government in 1815 — one of the rare cases in history where the capital of a colonizing country relocated to one of the colonies themselves. The only problem was that the area was underdeveloped, which is why Brazil decided to build its new capital from the ground up. :
