Tenochtitlán - Long before it was present-day Mexico City, Tenochtitlán served as the seat of the Aztec empire. Founded around 1325, it amassed a population of 400,000 within two centuries and became the capital in the late 15th century — by which point it was part of a confederacy with Tlacopán and Texoco (hence why the Aztec empire is also known as the Triple Alliance). Tenochtitlán was originally founded on two small islands in Lake Texcoco and connected to the mainland via causeways and canals; its area grew as artificial islands were built around it. The once-great city's era of glory — and that of the Triple Alliance itself — ended when Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés destroyed much of it in a 1521 siege. However, the Spanish recognized the symbolic and strategic importance of the site and chose it for the capital of Mexico City and even rebuilt the Aztec ceremonial center in the city’s main square, the Zócalo.:
