Its multicolored roof is actually made of orange, red, green, white, and brown ceramic Hungarian Zsolnay tiles — a feature added to the church during a restoration in the late 1800s. The tiles can withstand both hot and cold temperature extremes! There are about 149,500 individual tiles on the roof of Matthias Church, but inside the cathedral, you’ll also find beautiful stained glass windows and sculptures of many saints in addition to the Virgin Mary.
