Step 2 : Answer to the question "What is the closest galaxy to the Milky Way?"
Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy - Our closest known galactic neighbor is the Canis Major Dwarf Galaxy. Also known as the Canis Major Overdensity, this formation is a whopping 25,000 light years from our solar system, the Milky Way. In comparison, Earth is 30,000 light years from the center of our own galaxy, making Canis Major a little closer than you'd expect. It's thought to contain a billion stars within it. It's also surrounded by a ringlike structure of stars that wraps around it several times. The galaxy was discovered when astronomers were studying this spiral of stars in 2003. Through advanced infrared astronomy, researchers were able to detect 5,700 sources of infrared radiation and, in turn, Canis Major. Our closest spiral galaxy neighbor is the Andromeda Galaxy at 2 million light years away. There continue to be breakthroughs when it comes to mapping space with findings trickling in as technology advances. :
