Pettygrove was from Portland, Maine, and wanted to name the new Oregon settlement after his hometown. But Lovejoy wasn't from Portland — he was from Boston, Massachusetts, and he was all for naming the settlement after Beantown. The two agreed to settle the friendly dispute with a coin toss. The toss went Pettygrove's way, and Portland, Oregon, was born.:
