In 1997, its legislature passed Rule 81.35, which stated, “A person who meets the eligibility requirements of a voter under the Texas Election Code, Chapter 101, but who will be on a space flight during the early-voting period and on Election Day, may vote.” That makes a lot of sense, as many astronauts reside in Texas to be in close proximity NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. How does voting work hundreds of miles above the Earth? Astronauts at JSC’s Mission Control or the International Space Station receive their encrypted electronic ballots before Election Day and, using their unique credentials, are able to cast their votes, sending them back to the County Clerk’s office. Isn’t technology out of this world?:
