At the time, former President Thomas Jefferson had the largest collection of books in the young nation, and he offered to sell his library of nearly 6,500 volumes to the Library of Congress to replenish their shelves. The institution took him up on it, purchasing the books for $23,950 in 1815. (Jefferson, who once declared “I cannot live without books,” immediately started another collection.) Sadly, a second fire in 1851 destroyed nearly two-thirds of the books Jefferson had sold to the Library of Congress, although efforts have been underway to reassemble Jefferson’s library as it was when it was sold to Congress.:
